TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES, GEOMETRICS, VISIBILITY, AND ROUTE GUIDANCE

Nineteen papers, some abridged and others with discussions and author closures, are compiled concerning various aspects of traffic/highway engineering. Traffic control and highway signing topics include warrants for left-turn signal phasing; traffic control guidelines for isolated intersections on high-speed rural highways; extended call-delayed call detectors for signalization of high-speed intersections; maintenance costs of traffic signals; accident experience and operational guidelines for continuous two-way left-turn median lanes; benefit-cost analysis of advance treatment for no-passing zones; and design and evaluation of highway guide signs. Reflectorization of railroad rolling stock, and shoulder improvements on two-lane roads are discussed. Recent British developments in the design of rotaries (traffic circles) are described, and a mathematical model is presented of the formation and dissipation of traffic queues at intersections. Lighting/visibility studies are presented: review of discomfort glare research, economic models for highway/street illumination designs, performance of 400-W high-pressure sodium vapor lighting, pavement inset lights for use during fog, and driver performance with right-side convex mirrors. Route guidance systems are discussed in terms of human factors considerations, and a feasibility study and a pilot test of Japan's Comprehensive Automobile Traffic Control Project are reported.
