FRICTION MEASURING VEHICLES IN SCANDINAVIA. A COMPARATIVE STUDY

NORDISKA FRIKTIONSMAETARE. EN JAEMFOERANDE STUDIE

An investigation was carried out with the main purpose of comparing principles of and results obtained with some friction measuring vehicles used in Scandinavia. The reliability was also determined. Twenty road sections with different friction levels were used as test sections. The length of each section was 50 M. The sections were measured twice at speeds of 20, 50 and 70 km/h. The results from two measurements with the same vehicle and at the same speed were correlated and gave the magnitude of reliability. The results from the different vehicles were also correlated and gave the size of correlation. The results from this investigation do not show any good relationship between the measuring vehicles. The reliability is however satisfactory for most of the vehicles despite a shortage of low friction surfaces. Development towards better correlation is necessary. This is also in progress. The International Organization for Standardization ISO has suggested a useful measuring method. It is also possible to obtain the relation from experiments such as validation against a normal Scandinavian vehicle population. (Author/TRRL)
