EVALUATION AND ANALYSIS OF ELECTRIC CONE PENETROMETER TEST RESULTS

An electric cone penetrometer is developed and its performance is evaluated in the field investigations. This penetrometer contains a pair of load cells of strain gauge type to measure cone resistance and sleeve friction simultaneously and continuously up to a penetrated depth. Field tests include tests on artificially prepared loose and medium dense kalpi sand beds, natural (in-situ) silty existing theories related to interpretation of cpt results are reviewed and are applied to field tests. To identify the soils tested, Begemann method (1969) and Schertmann method (1969) have been applied and the later was found satisfactory. In layered soils the soil layers are clearly identified from the sudden change in the friction ratio. (TRRL)
