NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF INTERFERENCE OF THREE SURFACE STRIP FOOTINGS BY FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

The problem of three strip footings resting on cohesionless soil is analysed by the finite element method. Nonlinear, stress dependent and inelastic behaviour of soil, as suggested by Duncan and Chang and the incremental method of loading has been used in the analysis. Two parameters, namely rigidity of footings and spacing between them, are considered. The article deals with constant stresses, stress deformation characteristics of footings continuum stress and settlements, tilts, differential settlements and heave for both central and outer footings. Data of analytical investigation obtained from computer work is presented and discussed. Based on the work, suitable conclusions are drawn regarding the behaviour of such type of soil-foundation system. (TRRL)
