RE-USE OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE; APPLICATIONS AND METHODS

Three methods for re-use of asphaltic concrete are identified: (1) hot recycling; (2) cold recycling and (3) surface regeneration. Two methods of cold recycling are discussed, being: (1) re-use after breaking up of the flexible pavement (the asphaltic concrete is crushed, and can be used bound with cement or unbound in roadbases); (2) re-use without breaking up (with this method the asphaltic concrete has to be crushed at a remote site). A detailed description of hot recycling with breaking up of the flexible pavement is given. Three possibilities for diminution of the broken up asphaltic concrete (crushing; heating with steam; heating and planing) are discussed. Several drum mixers for hot recycling are reviewed. A brief glossary is included. Conclusions are drawn. (TRRL)
