Design of steel structures is often governed by serviceability requirements rather than on purely strength considerations. Lack of research data and code provisions place the designer in a difficult position in trying to select the design criteria for serviceability based on rational concepts. Deflection and drift control limits can be determined either from a survey of existing practice or by employing a cost benefit analysis for the particular structure. To avoid costly studies for individual structures it is suggested that the new revision of as 1250 should devote more space to serviceability criteria for routine type structures. (Author/TRRL)
