SIGNAL CHANGE INTERVALS AND INTERSECTION GEOMETRY

While a large amount of work has been carried out during recent years on signal change intervals (SCI), the presently used methodology and design standards for defining the duration of SCI are not considered adequate. The Institute of Transportation Engineers has created the committee 4A-16 'Use and Timing of Signal Change Intervals,' charged with the responsibility to study this problem and recommend possible improvements in determining SCI. This article proposes a methodology for estimating signal changing intervals based on the West German practice. Such a methodology defines the actual critical paths and the conflict points between the vehicles clearing and those entering the intersection and therefore, results in SCIs that reflect better the intersection geometry and the actual critical conditions during the clearance period.
