MILLING MACHINE AND EXPLOSIVES FOR THE TARVISIO TUNNEL

FRESA ED ESPLOSIVO PER LA GALERIA DI TARVISIO

The 2300M Tarvisio Tunnel is part of the Carnia-Tarvisio Motorway, Italy. The tunnel is aligned on a horizontal curve of 1900M radius and has a uniform gradient of 1.74%. This illustrated article describes the use of a milling cutter machine in conjunction with explosive methods for the excavation of the pilot tunnel. The main reasons for the selection of the milling machine were: (1) minimal disturbance of the environment and to the rock; (2) competitive cost in terms of tunnel length (2 x 2300M) and the geology of the rock formation; (3) reduced working time for the project.
