Observations are mode regarding certain trends in transportation and factors which impact upon transportation as indicated in imagery from remote sensing satellites. The first of these observations concerns the striking size of the earth and the great gap in transport capabilities between rich countries and the poor. Other factors discussed include the increasingly integrated global economy and the growing challenge of the mounting world population. Four distinct world traffic networks may be distinguished: intercontinental routes, rural systems, urban systems, and intercity systems. This address also discusses the allocation of resources, global disparities in the distribution of transportation systems and populations, international cooperative effort in aid of third world countries, and the organization of a global approach.
