COLLISION WARNING DEVICE
Various types of radar equipment have been developed with special facilities for collision avoidance. Besides the improvement of plotting devices, special radar equipments with anticollision devices are available. In order to give vessels equipped with normal merchant marine radar a warning of a possible collision risk an 'add on unit' has recently been developed. This device can very easily be connected to any ship's radar, and gives an alarm both visually and acoustically when other vessels are approaching to within a certain distance. The basic design and the function of this device will be described. It provides a warning ring on the PPI for the close distance (appr. 4nm) and a warning ring for the long distance (greater than 4 less than 25 nm) which can be preset by the operator. The unit uses binary integration techniques with application of a correlation detector as to give a better indication of the collision risk even under heavy sea clutter conditions.
