PARKING DEMAND AT LARGE RETAIL SHOPPING STORES: A RE-APPRAISAL

This paper, which includes a review of existing parking standards in the United Kingdom and abroad, proposes appropriate parking standards for use at British hypermarkets, superstores and supermarkets based on the results of recently reported studies and supplemented by the results of additional surveys undertaken by the authors at two selected stores (in West and North Yorkshire). It is concluded that more appropriate design parking indices (pi) for shopping stores, which take into account the need for adequate circulation as well as for allowing for growth in car ownership up to at least 1990, are: for supermarkets and superstores without petrol 11.0 car spaces per 100 sq M of retail area (with petrol 12.5); and for hypermarkets 20.5 car spaces per 100 sq M of retail area. These figures only apply for `isolated stores'. Lower values would be appropriate for stores being developed within town/city central areas. (TRRL)
