WEARING RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT AND CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

Wear of asphalt concrete pavements in Finland has been calculated at 30 to 40 sps-unit (grams per vehicle-km), and wear of cement concrete pavements correspondingly 10 to 25. Comparing investigations have been made at 3 different circular test tracks, with driving speeds of 30 and 65 km per hour and wheel loads of 4 and 25 kn. Wear of pavements caused by studded truck and car tyres were compared on 4 asphalt concrete and 4 cement concrete pavements. Correlation between test tracks was very good with results showing that the wear of asphalt pavements in wet conditions was 3 times compared to dry pavements. Correspondingly, in cement concrete pavement the wear in wet conditions was 2.5 times more. Dry asphalt pavement wore 18 to 101 per cent (according to different aggregate materials) more than cement concrete pavements while on wet asphalt pavements the results varied more. Truck tyres caused 6.2 to 6.8 times more wear than car tyres although the type of stone material used in pavements had effect on the wear. (TRRL)
