LOW ADHESION BETWEEN WHEEL AND RAIL CAUSED BY FALLEN LEAVES AND ITS REMEDY

Recently it was reported that railcars frequently slipped on the rail over a steep upgrade section of a certain line in autumn. In order to clarify the cause of wheel slip due to low adhesion between wheel and rail and to remedy it, JNR has carried out: (1) measurement of the friction coefficients on the railtop by using a portable rail tribometer, (2) collection of the oily deposits on the railtop, (3) various meteorological observations, (4) field test of ceramic materials used to increase the adhesion coefficient between wheel and rail, and (5) various laboratory tests.
