The bearing capacity of ice when loading is uniform over a circular area is expressed by the formula: p=ah2, in which "p" is the total weight in kg, "h" the thickness of black ice in cm and "a" the load index (kg cm2). The official value for "a" in Finland is 4 kg cm2, which seemed too low. Tests were carried out in Katumajaervi, in 1982, in connection with the start of the Finlandia skiing event. White ice was analyzed in a cold laboratory and the crystal size and tensile stress of each thin layer were measured. The final bearing capacity was calculated. Results gave a value of 7 kg cm2 for 'a', when half the thickness of white ice was used. (TRRL)
