EFFECT OF POTASSIUM SALT DIFFUSION ON MARINE CLAY STRENGTH

EFECTO DE LA DIFUSION DE SALES POTASICAS EN LA RESISTENCIA DE UNA ARCILLA MARINA

The improvement of the strength of a sensitive marine clay by potassium salt diffusion is studied. The strength of the samples was determined using the Swedish fall cone apparatus. The plasticity was determined according to ASTM standards. The strength of the samples treated with potassium permanganate increases 300 times. The liquid limit increases considerably, and the plastic limit slightly, the result being a bilinear increase in the plasticity index. Though in most cases a plasticity increase means a worsening of the soils as foundation and construction materials, sensitive clays act differently and improve. The procedure recommended by the author is to prepare holes or narrow open pits and pour a potassium salt solution into them. (TRRL)
