DANGER! WRONG-WAY DRIVER AHEAD!

The Wrong-Way Device consists of electronic direction sensors imbedded in the roadway to sense wrong-way traffic movement, signal a semaphore arm to lower across the road, and activate a variable message board to alert any exiting traffic to the hazard. In 1979 the Illinois Department of Transportation installed the device on the exit ramp of a parallel-cloverleaf type intersection. The results of this test and evaluation of the Wrong-Way Device are summarized in this article. Concluding comments refer to the cost effectiveness of the device.
