PERSPECTIVE PLAN OF TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION (ROADS) FOR THE COUNTRY, FOR THE PERIOD 1981 - 2001 AD

The plan, for the whole of India, shows long and short term proposals, split into various five-year plans in space and economy, integrating plans of all states and union territories. It should show the hierarchy of roads and show connections among all the settlements with a population of 500 and above. The author describes the various components which include the creation of a National Institute of Traffic and Transportation Planning and outlines the physical, economic and social goals and objectives of the proposed plan. Factors affecting the formulation of the plan are listed in 13 appendices. These include public sector expenditure on the transport sector, the growth in road length from 1950 to 1976, the standards and capacities of the various types of roads and a suggested list of routes for addition to the national system. Indices of growth and trends are included from 1950 to 1978 based on the year of 1970; total energy demand is predicted and the number of vehicles registered are listed for the years 1950 to 1978. The current level of taxation is examined and tables are given to show that public ownership of trucks is only 0.5 per cent of the total compared with nearly half of the buses. (TRRL)
