The maximum speed of 50 km per hour is unsafe, because man cannot see at this speed in an urban area. Pedestrians, among whom especially children are the most frequent victims, comprise 30% of those killed in traffic. The braking distance increases, the danger to the environment is higher and traffic signals are difficult to read with rising speed. A green wave is safer, because drivers keep to the indicated speed. The speeds in the car should be adjusted, so that drivers prefer to remain in third gear. Fines for speeding should be higher. Future drivers should learn about these dangers when learning to drive. For the covering abstract see TRIS 385386. (TRRL)
