EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF SHEAR DISTRIBUTION IN MULTICELL STRUCTURE

In multicell structures, for instance the tanker structures, many difficulties arise in order to determine the shear distribution among the webs which constitute the section of the member. The problem is even more complicated for the presence of lightening holes which modify the stress distribution itself. In the present paper the results of experimental tests carried out in the Isituto di Costruzioni Navali (Shipbuilding Institute) of the Genoa University are briefly discussed. An experimental analysis of the shear force distribution was made in the structural elements of the transverse section of a model idealizing the structure of a tanker with a longitudinal bulkhead in the plane of symmetry. These tests were aimed moreover to supply useful indications on the increase of shear stresses connected with the presence of cut-outs similar to those used for the trimming tanks.
