ROUNDABOUTS, PART 1: LITERATURE STUDIES - DESIGN CRITERIA

RUNDKJOERINGER, DEL I: LITTERATURSTUDIER - PROSJEKTERINGSGRUNNLAG

This report is the first part of a study examining roundabouts as an actual solution for intersection control in Norway. So far the use of roundabouts in Norway has been very limited. Roundabouts have been unpopular because of the large area required, and the tendency for congestion under heavy traffic. The background for starting this study is the very promising results experienced with the new types of roundabouts (offside priority) launched in Britain in the last part of 1960. The report summarizes the existing British principles for roundabout design, and presents results from roundabout studies (mainly British). In some respects the British principles for roundabout design are adjusted to fit Norwegian conditions and our road standards. On this basis the report presents a plan for the remaining part of the study, containing: supplementing studies on existing roundabouts, experiments on changing the layout of existing roundabouts, and building and studying the effectiveness of small and mini-roundabouts at several places in Norway. For reports no. 2 and 3 TRIS nos. 385362 and 385363. (TRRL)
