The described tests were performed to give a first specification of the stress distribution in the floor of bulk carriers near the slanting wall of the side tanks. The tests effected on the floor specimen showed that the floor in the considered area behaves as a common beam provided with a relatively sharp variation in section correspondingly to which the principal stresses are subject to a remarkable increase. During the tests, efforts were made to value this increase. The test results may vary together with the size of the specimen and the modification of the ratios between the various sizes of the end portion of the floor. Under the conditions the tests were effected, the value of the principal stresses measured close to the variation in section of the floor, or about double with respect to the values which may be calculated by the basic theory of bent beams. As a metter of fact, in all the load conditions the floor was tested in the increase coefficients of the principal stresses under the slanting wall of the side tanks fell within a range between 1,7 and 2,6. If the results of such tests are to be applied to a direct calculation, when the floor shape and the load conditions are comparable to those of the checked specimen, it will be possible to use in first approximation the values of the increase coefficients found not only under the slanting wall of the side tanks, but also in the adjacent area.
