Energy Development Associates, a Gulf + Western company, since 1982 has concentrated on battery engineering for fleet vehicle application. Although the potential market volume offered by the passenger vehicle application is much larger, the commercial fleet application offers a more logical market for EV introduction. Delivery vehicle ranges are well within the present capabilities of zinc-chloride battery-powered vehicles and their routes are more predictable. Routine maintenance is also more manageable during the product introduction phase. A half-ton van was used as the battery test bed for fleet vehicle applications. This vehicle as a payload of 1,000 pounds, a top speed of 55 mph, a 0-30 acceleration of 15 seconds when fully loaded, and an operational range in excess of 80 miles. The low rear floor of this front-wheel drive vehicle makes the retrofit from IC engines to battery power straightforward. The motor controller, heater, and battery electronics are positioned under the hood of the van. (Author)
