DESIGN WITH RESPECT TO RUNNING AND MAINTENANCE

PROJEKTERING MED HAENSYN TILL DRIFT OCH UNDERHAALL

The number of hours spent in analysing the consequences of a design as regards maintenance is very small. Calculation of annual cost is a necessary but often insufficient method of scrutinising alternative designs with respect to overall economy. It must be supplemented by feedback from experience and decision analysis. A four-stage model is outlined, where stage 1 consists of the calculation of annual cost, stage 2 comprises a description of conditions relating to the alternatives, stage 3 consists of decision analysis, such as probability of saving a certain sum if material a is chosen instead of b, and stage 4 is a follow-up, i.e. feedback from experience relating to actual costs and maintenance intervals. A practical example dealing with the design of a tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists is described in detail. (TRRL)
