RUT DEPTH MEASURING VEHICLES IN SCANDINAVIA. A COMPARATIVE STUDY

A study was carried out to compare different rut depth measuring vehicles in Scandinavia. The main purpose of this study was to compare the measurement results from the different vehicles in order to facilitate an exchange of measurement data between Scandinavian countries. The method consists of repeated measurements on a number of road sections having different degrees of rut depth. The following measuring vehicles were studied: the Saab RST, National Road and Traffic Research Institute, Sweden. The VTI RST, National Road and Traffic Research Institute, Sweden. The Finnish rut Depth measuring vehicle, Road and Traffic Laboratory, Finland. The Norwegian rut depth measuring vehicle, Institute of Transport Economics, Norway. The measurement results from the Saab RST were compared with those from the VTI RST and the Norwegian rut depth measuring vehicle. Measurement data from the VTI RST and the Finnish measuring vehicle were compared. Furthermore, the reliability and the speed dependence of the VTI RST and the Saab RST were tested. The measurements were carried out in Finland and Sweden. The results show that an exchange of measurement data between the vehicles will be possible. The Saab RST and the Norwegian vehicle underestimate maximum rut depth and the numerical conformity with other vehicles having a broader measuring width is not relevant. The underestimation of the maximum rut depth of the Norwegian vehicle depends on the fact that the measuring data are based upon a mean value from two rut depths instead of the maximum value of the entire lane.
