VEHICLE PERFORMANCE AND FUEL CONSUMPTION ADVANCE CALCULATIONS

The authors discuss the methods used to measure vehicle performance and develop a general method of predicting vehicle performance and consumption. The method described can be applied to all types of drive configuration, engine and transmission. The computer model developed is capable of interactive as well as batch processing and results can be displayed graphically. Each vehicle parameter can be varied and design conditions can be formulated. The method is based on the General Motors GPSIM 6 program which uses stabilised characteristics of vehicle components to calculate performance and consumption in quasi-constant conditions. Data are stored in single and dual-dimensional tables and freely selectable shift problems are taken into account. Illustrations are given to show possible graphical interpretations of the system for the vehicle engine, transmission and driving resistance. The Euromin values, an arithmetic mean of consumption at a constant 90 km/h, a constant 120 km/h and the ECE cycle, are derived. Examples are given to show how relationships between performance values, consumption values, and vehicle parameters may be investigated for product decision and tendency analysis.
