In their search for longer-lasting repairs, engineers are turning to fabrics for use beneath asphalt overlays. Fabrics can extend overlay life by helping to keep water out of road bases and by providing reinforcement. This article presents a roundup of state-of-the-art use of geotextiles bases on examples of their use in Tyler, Texas; Cook County, Illinois; and Charleston and Madison, West Virginia. Subjects covered include base preparation, overlay fabric selection and application, tack coat application, costs, and others.
