REACTIVITY BETWEEN CHEMICAL CARGOES
The purpose of this investigation was to prepare a survey of safe cargo combinations to obtain the necessary degree of safety as well as the best possible utilization of the tonnage engaged in transportation of liquid chemicals at sea. The U.S. Coast Guard Guide to Compatibility of Chemicals for Adjacent Bulk Loading, NVIC 5-70, has been the basis of the work. Laboratory testing methods consisted of mixing tests covering measuring of the rise in temperature and pressure and differential thermal analysis on binary mixtures. Practical cases of cargo mixing and data about heat transfer indicate that small scale mixing, characterized by leakages with mass flow less than 1-2 tons/hour, should be considered as most relevant for defining the criteria for dangerous rectivity by the laboratory testing. Criteria for dangerous reactivity that were taken are: rise in temperature greater than or equal to 50 C, or development of gas, in the mixing tests at room temperature, or exotherm reaction between room temperature and 70 C by differential thermal analysis. About 350 binary combinations were tested and about 160 new chemicals were evaluated. In addition, the results of several hundred experiments carried out by others are worked into a proposal for a Compatibility Chart with 25 groups of chemicals.
