Preliminary results of a survey of Roads Magazine readers who are also members of APWA's Institute for Equipment Services points to significant market shifts and new statistics on equipment and truck use at public works locations. Among the key findings 56 percent operate a machinery fleet (excluding trucks) valued between $100,000 and $1.0 million, with an average of 60 units per location; the respondents plan to buy an average six new machinery units in the next 18 months, increasing the fleet .10 percent; mean fleet utilization is 72-74 percent; asphalt paving and recycling equipment lead the public sector's "wish list"; 30 percent of the agencies predict they will do more resurfacing and road replacement and contractors less; and 60 percent plan to do more surface maintenance in the next five years than at present.
