THE USE OF POLYMER MODIFIED BITUMENS IN PAVEMENT APPLICATIONS

L'IMPIEGO NELLE PAVIMENTAZIONI DI BITUMI MODIFICATI CON POLIMERI

Following laboratory studies to analyse the physico-mechanical behaviour and the rheologic characteristics of bitumen-polymer mixtures, experimental insitu applications were carried out on two viaducts on each of two motorways (Appennino and Trafori). The wearing course mixtures used comprised 80/100 bitumen modified with polyethylene at 4 and 7%, at a compaction temperature of 160 deg or over. Core samples from the test sites showed the pavement to be practically impermeable (high density and low residual voids) and of great mechanical strength. Test results from the four sites are tabulated, and the equipment used described and illustrated. (TRRL)
