The design of the single point mooring system (SPM) must be such that it will facilitate, unassisted, safe berthing and unberthing of oil tankers and ore-slurry-oil vessels of large deadweight. These safe limits may be roughly delineated as follows--for mooring 15 ft waves--25 knot winds; for unmooring 20 ft waves--45 knot winds. The advantages and disadvantages of the catenary chain leg buoy (SMB), the single anchor leg mooring (SALM), and the exposed location buoy (ELSBM) are described. A quick-disconnect self-sealing coupling and monitoring equipment for oil spills are also described.
