MAINTENANCE AT THE DISTRICT ENGINEER LEVEL

The responsibilities of the maintenance engineer are discussed and the importance of his own personal commitment to the job is emphasised. The management of maintenance is outlined in three stages: (I) assessment of requirements: the need for an inventory, inspections and the use of data on traffic, soils, topography and climate; (II) use of resources: resource requirements, their allocation and scheduling; and (III) monitoring: field inspections and desk reviews.
