JAPANESE SHIPYARDS THRIVE ON AUTOMATION
Key factors in Japan's domination of shipbuilding are huge capital investiments in equipment and advanced welding technology. Equipment which can rotate 800-ton prefabricated modules is a prime factor in improving welding quality control and speeding up production. Techniques used at four shipyards are described.
