DETERMINATION OF EQUIVALENT SINGLE-AXLE LOADS ON SUPER SINGLE TIRES

This research was conducted to determine the single-axle load on super single tyres that is equivalent to the standard 18-kip axle load on dual tyres. In addition the degree of potential damage to pavements (rigid and flexible) caused by the front axle was evaluated. Results indicate that regardless of pavement thickness, pavement material, percentage of joint load transfer in rigid pavements, subgrade soil, and environmental conditions, the equivalent axle load for a given equivalency factor is constant, but slightly higher for rigid than for flexible pavements. The amount of axle load reduction is not linearly proportional the equivalency factor. (TRRL)
