UPGRADING THE PROPULSIVE EFFICIENCY OF SINGLE SCREW SUPERTANKERS
A discussion of propellers and propeller design developments which would increase the propulsive efficiency of propellers is presented. The discussion includes explanations of propeller efficiency and hull efficiency, the trends in single screw tanker propulsion, and goes into some known methods of improving supertanker propulsive efficiency. The author then describes a modified propeller, which could possibly improve the propeller efficiency while keeping hull drag caused by thrust deduction low. Means of evaluating the modified propeller, including tests which should be performed, are also discussed in the article.
