ELECTRIFICATION AT THE RIGHT PRICE

Determined not to repeat the cost over-run problems which threatened completion of the London-Manchester/Liverpool electrification in the 1960s, strict monitoring of costs and engineering progress was maintained with re-estimation at half-yearly intervals to cater for increased material and other prices. Sound planning and investment allocation for future projects which optimise railway and contractors' resources will enhance the significant savings in costs achieved as a result of experience on the West Coast scheme.
