Based on experience with bucket chain excavators in opencast mines, a ship unloader has been developed which is equipped with a bucket chain to lift material out of the hold of a vessel. With a bucket chain traversing with a travelling bridge in the longitudinal direction of the ship, and on the bridge in a transverse direction, all parts of the hold can be reached. Since the bucket chain can be lifted and lowered, it can always be lowered on to the material as required for unloading. The material raised by the bucket chain is deposited on to a bridge conveyor, which runs transversely to the ship and delivers the material outboards. Capacity of this type of bulk unloading system is given, and an alternative to mounting this heavy machinery on board the ship is also briefly discussed.
