SPECIAL DRAINAGE REQUIREMENTS IN ROLLING, HILLY AND SNOWFALL AREAS FOR EFFICIENT PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE

The author recalls the importance and requirements of drainage. The mechanism of water drainage from hill slopes is explained together with that of surface drainage. The importance of side drains (v-shaped or trapezoidal) for the working of surface drainage systems is emphasized and the steps to follow to design a surface drainage system are described. Attention is drawn to the special requirement of cross drainage when a stream crosses the road. The various aspects of sub-surface drainage (lowering of the water table, control of seepage flow, control of capillary rise and control of frost heave) are described. Problems associated with snow clearance, icing and spring thaw are outlined and remedial melasures are suggested. (TRRL)
