MAINTENANCE OF ROADS IN DESERT

The maintenance of desert roads requires the constant removal of drifting sand during the summer months which would be impossible to remove at a later time in the year. Sand stabization techniques using flexible weed fencing is also used to control the movement of sand but this also requires constant maintenance. In addition to drifting sand dunes another problem encountered is that of eroded and rain-cut road shoulders. The paper outlines such problems encountered in the maintenance of desert roads and methods used for overcoming them. (TRRL)
