IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY OF POTHOLE REPAIR CREWS

The high level of road maintenance budget for most US state DOT agencies has resulted in analysis of existing operations to develop cost-effective repair strategies. The paper examines the utilisation of manual pothole repair crews in Pennsylvania, and presents specific recommendations aimed at improving productivity. The data were gathered from over 25 repair crew operations covering 50 days of actual field observations. Production data were recorded using time-lapse photography, field diaries and reports, and in addition geometric characteristics, profiles and density measurements were documented for 128 pothole repair operations.
