ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENT AS AN AID TO ASSESS MAINTENANCE NEEDS

As it is well established that the roughness of a road adversely affects vehicle fuel consumption due to increased rolling resistance a good maintenance strategy should keep road surfaces as smooth as possible within the constraints of a maintenance budget. Equipment used in India for the measurement of road roughness includes the TRRL-developed towed fifth wheel bump integrator, and for routine assessment, the car-mounted integrator unit. This unit has been successfully used for the measurement of road roughness for over 40000km of roads in India as part of the road user cost study. Based on data gathered for different types of roads, the roughness levels for different surfacings have been determined and will be used for the development of acceptable standards for roughness levels under Indian conditions.
