A FIXED-ARM MOORING

A fixed-arm mooring developed by the French firm Equipments Mecaniques et Hydrauliques (EMH) has several advantages over buoys chained to several anchors, which require frequent replacement of the chains (every year) and rubber hoses (every 6 mo) because of the rotating and orbital motion of the buoy. An inclined trellis arm attached to a bed plate at the sea floor by a universal joint permits vertical and horizontal motion and is provided with a float at the top for hose connections to ships. Only a small section of the hose, which spans the universal joint, is flexible, the rest being permanently attached to the inclined trellis arm and a submarine pipeline. The system requires little maintenance, its operation is less costly than that of a chained mooring, and it can be used for conveying other materials that are transported by sea, such as minerals, chemical products, and grain.
