THE CONFIGURATION OF A MOORING CABLE DURING DEPLOYMENT OF AN AUTOMATIC MOORING SYSTEM: A NUMERICAL ANALYSIS
In automatic deployment devices for deepsea moored buoys, an anchor or sinker is descending from the buoy on a cable which is being payed out under controlled tension. The catenary shape which the cable assumes depends on the current distribution and on the properties of buoy, cable, and sinker. The catenary is described by a second order, nonlinear partial differential equation with a final solution by computer which permits prediction of the distances through which buoy and sinker will drift and of the payed-out cable length at the end of the mooring process.
