CONOCO PROVES ITS MONOBUOY SYSTEM WELL SUITED TO UK SEA CONDITIONS

Conoco Ltd. has more than 18 months' experience with a monobuoy terminal in Humber estuary for unloading crude oil through a five mile, 36 in. dia pipeline to a tank farm at Tetney from which the Humber refinery is supplied. During the winter the line is flushed with sea water to avoid solidification of Libyan crude oil of 30 deg F pour point. On average one tanker a week arrives in the Humber, but as many as three have been handled in one week. Two tugs, used to service the buoy and the floating hoses and to help moor the tankers, are fitted with detergent sprays for spilled oil, but so far have had only one minor spill from a tanker. The design and construction of the installation, the operating plan, and an account of a nighttime arrival of a tanker assisted by radio and searchlights are described.
