TERMINALS/CORYTON'S SAMI
Mobil Oil Co. Ltd. has ordered Marconi Marine"s Speed of Approach Measuring Instrument (SAMI) for installation at the Coryton Refinery terminal on the Thames. This installation will be the first to provide an indication of true distance of true distance of a vessel off the berth in addition to closing speed. The complete system is to be installed on the jetty without any electronics onboard ship other than a conventional VHF radio link to the pilot. While the tanker is navigation the channel approaching the berth, the system gives the pilot his speed in knots. When the vessel is off the jetty, units at either end of the jetty provide the pilot with highly accurate speed and range information of both the bow and stern sections of the vewsel. During this phase, movement of as little as r ft/min can be measured, and distance off down to 2 ft.
