THE POSITION OF INJURY PREVENTION IN TRAFFIC SAFETY RESEARCH

DE PLAATS VAN LETSELPREVENTIE IN HET VERKEERSVEILIGHEIDSONDERZOEK

At first the group concerned with "prevention of injuries in traffic" was small and consisted of scientists, laymen and professionals. There is also a working party of medical people. In 1960, the biomechanical group concerned with injuries to the head, was formed. It studies the injuries that are technically caused, such as penetration, compression, function and retardation injuries. These different types can all be prevented by a crash helmet. Research is carried out in different ways: experimental and mathematical. More attention should be paid to the motorist, cyclist and pedestrian. A meeting to be held in Delft in 1984 on the safety of cyclists and pedestrians is referred to. (TRRL)
