DRIVERS' ASSESSMENT OF THEIR OWN DRIVING ABILITY

BILFOERARES UPPFATTNING OM EGEN KOERFOERMAAGA

The subjective driving ability of drivers with 0, 1 and 2 year old licences, respectively, has been studied. Approximately 1300 drivers responded to a postal questionnaire in which they assessed their driving ability by comparing themselves in various aspects with drivers in general. According to the results, the subjective driving ability consists of two components, one driving skill and one driving ability component. There is a difference between sexes regarding subjective driving skill. Results show that men overestimate their driving skill. This is true especially for recently qualified male drivers. The more skillful the driver estimates himself to be, the less defensive is his driving style, i.e. the speed and overtaking frequence are higher. No corresponding correlation could be observed for the other subjective component, defensive driving ability and driving style. (TRRL)
