EFFECT OF LATERAL CONFINEMENT ON SWELL PRESSURE IN EXPANSIVE SOILS
The paper gives details of the design of equipment and associated testing procedure for the measurement of vertical swell pressure as a function of lateral confinement for expansive soil samples. The testing procedure involves the use of a hollow cylindrical specimen of expansive soil. Using this measuring technique, the lateral swell pressure in an expansive soil can be determined simultaneously with the determination of vertical swell pressure. The practical applications of the data obtained by the use of this technique are discussed. (TRRL)
