LNG FACILITY PIPING USES JACKETED FOAM INSULATION
At the Everett, Mass., LNG facility of Distrigas Corp., some 1500 linear feet of 0.75 to 14 in. dia piping was insulated with one of the first single-layer applications of rigid polyurethane foam LNG pipe insulation (Dow Chemical Co.s Thurane") sheathed with aluminum jacketing. The foam has a small closed cell structure, a compressive strength of 25 psi at 5% deflection, and a recommended temperature range of -290 F to plus 250 F. The insulation is highly resistant to solvents, water absorption is less than 0.1% by vol. and water vapor transmission is 1.0.
