DEEP WATER REPAIRS MADE WITH NEW ALIGNER/HABITAT
Repair of Michigan Wisconsin Pipe Line Co.'s 24 in. gas transmission line in 190 ft of water was carried out by J. Ray McDermott & Co. using a new subsea pipe aligner designed for 20-48 in. pipe and an underwater habitat unit inside which welding repairs can be made in a gas atmosphere. Othere elements of the system include: a derrick barge with quarters for 156 men having a revolving crane of 500 ton capacity plus pipe coating, welding, and laying equipment; a decompression chamber on the deck of the barge in which men can live for days during compression or decompression; and a diving bell for transportation between the decompression chamber and the habitat.
