CONCEPTS FOR TOMORROW'S PIPE LINE SERVICE VALVES

Pipeline companies are revising valve standards in line with new U.S. Department of Transportation requirements for periodic testing. Better sealing methods must be developed. Metal-to-metal sealing can be accomplished with a new valve; however, after it has been cycled a few times, a dead-tight seal cannot be made. Features of new valve designs should include simplicity of in-line repairs, including seat, seal, and packing replacement without system downtime; long valve life with minimum maintenance; added fail-safe features; capability of withstanding higher seated pressures; and provisions for thermal relief.
